The year is 1655. There have been two British Civil Wars since 1642. During the period between the first and second Civil War some changes to the constitution were implemented (e.g. Parliament had to be called every three years and removing some Royal controlled courts). In the second Civil War however, Scotland supported King Charles I after Cromwell had broken his promise to implement Presbyterianism. The Royalists lost, partially due to Cromwell’s professionalisation of the army. After various attempts at forming a Parliament, Cromwell, who was a religious zealot and increasingly power hungry, disbanded Parliament and imposed military dictatorship on the whole of the British Isles. Scotland has a long and successful history of opposing military encounters by England, additionally, the English Navy had opposed Cromwell’s rule when he came to power, and there is significant opposition to the Cromwellian system of governance.
